The devs say that these sales are used to pay for servers, so with steam workshop enabled there would be less servers needed. Maybe it's because the devs would lose a percentage of first class ticket sales. So, basically, all steam users would benefit, none steam users would be in exactly the same boat as they are now, so no difference for them.
The devs won't enable workshop but give no concrete reason for doing so, other than it wouldn't work for none steam users. Steam workshop would enable a decent speed for all steam users. We understand that not everyone can afford this, and this is why we provide a limited free service, but it simply isn't viable for us to not offer the First Class Ticket option. It costs a lot of money to run and maintain a service like this, and the First Class Ticket sales help to offset the cost of the free server access that all registered and supported versions of Trainz receive. Even if we did add Steam Workshop for content generated within Steam editions, the majority of content would still need to be downloaded through the Download Station.Īt the current time, as we do see a lot of sales through the non Steam locations, we do not have any plans to change Trainz to be Steam only.Īs to the Download Station itself, unfortunately providing this service is not free for us. Unfortunately, due to the way that Steam workshop works, we cannot simply transfer the Download Station to Steam Workshop (in part due to the license agreement that this content was uploaded under).Īdditionally, as Steam workshop is ONLY accessible to Steam users (and Trainz is sold primarily through our website, plus also sold through the Apple AppStore), it is not currently appropriate for us to provide a download service that would only be accessible to a relatively small number of people.
